Why doesn't my password appear when I type it? (Putty/Linux)

Modified on Wed, 20 Sep, 2023 at 12:03 AM

When connecting to a Linux shell via Putty within your lab, you may notice that no keystrokes are displayed on the screen when entering the password.

This is a part of the security of the Linux Command Line Interface (CLI). Passwords are not given visual feedback in the CLI so that onlookers cannot obtain the length of your password.

Your keystrokes are being accepted, and you simply need to strike Enter when finished.
